Bacteriostatic water is sterile water for injection containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, distinguishing it from standard sterile water by its ability to inhibit bacterial growth across multiple withdrawals from the same vial. This preservative property is the reason bacteriostatic water — rather than plain sterile water — is the standard reconstitution diluent used in peptide research: because lyophilized (freeze-dried) peptides are typically reconstituted once and then drawn from repeatedly over days or weeks, a preservative-containing diluent is necessary to maintain sterility across that multi-use period.
